Reimagine Coral Reefs:
Climate Data as lived experience
Reimagining Coral Reefs: Climate Data as Lived Experience is a project developed in collaboration with Jason Lynch and Ben Williams at the Institute of Zoology ZSL London.
Using the audio recordings and lidar photogrammetry of coral reefs captured from Indonesia, we have re-constructed these real-world coral habitats in virtual reality, creating an immersive, interactive and gamified virtual environment. Via virtual reality headsets and controllers, visitors can ‘dive’ amongst healthy, degraded and re-imagined coral reefs from both human and non- human perspectives. These virtual experiences are accompanied by a variety of physical and mixed reality artefacts co-created with design students and scientists, and we hope eventually, indigenous communities.
Our endeavour seeks to make meaningful changes to how climate data is represented in the public eye, and offer a powerful new tool in the communication of critical scientific data in general to a wider audience.
